How many days do you need in Iceland? For the full Ring Road around the island, the honest answer is at least seven, and I say that as someone who tried to do it in fewer and felt every missing hour.

Here is the rough shape. The south coast alone, the waterfalls, the black beaches, the glacier lagoon, deserves the better part of two days; rush it into one and you spend the whole drive watching extraordinary things go by at speed. The Golden Circle near Reykjavik is a comfortable day. The north, around Lake Myvatn, with its geothermal fields and lava, is another. The long eastern stretch is mostly scenery through the windscreen, but it still eats the better part of a driving day. And the Snaefellsnes peninsula in the west needs a day of its own if you want it, though having since driven the whole loop I would give that day back to the south.

Add a buffer, because Iceland will make you use it: weather closes roads, a hike runs long, a place you only meant to glance at holds you for hours. Seven days lets the trip breathe. Five or six turns it into an endurance drive where the country becomes a blur outside the glass.

My own first loop was too fast, squeezed in after a few days of hiking, and the east and Snaefellsnes both got shortchanged. Having done it properly since, I would not spend those days differently: after the south coast, neither held up, and the time belongs where the country is at its best. Learn from that. Give Iceland a week, and if you can give it ten days, even better. The country rewards slowness, and quietly punishes the rush.
