Self-organizing the South Pacific (without a resort)

Most people do the South Pacific as a package: one resort, transfers included, decisions made for them. We did the opposite, and stitched a month across four countries together ourselves, flights, ferries, car rentals, island hopping. It is very doable. Here is what I would tell you before you try it.

In Fiji, the Yasawa islands run on a simple system: a daily catamaran up the chain, and a multi-day pass that lets you hop off at one island, stay, and hop back on to the next. We used it to string together three different island resorts in a row, each one a boat ride apart. Book the pass and your resort nights together, in order, because the boat only comes once a day and missing it strands you.

The thing to internalise is how thin the infrastructure gets off the main island. We flew to little Taveuni and walked out of the airport to find, simply, no taxis. No one. We started walking toward the hotel until they sent a car. Small islands have a handful of vehicles and one road full of potholes. Plan for slow, and for the small planes between islands having strict luggage limits, we left half our bags in Nadi.

And learn from my worst piece of planning. We meant to add the Solomon Islands, then realised at the last minute it is a malaria zone and I had not brought the tablets. Nadi had exactly one box, not enough for two, at a price that made no sense. It was our honeymoon, so leaving one of us behind was not an option, and we dropped the country. Check malaria, visas and vaccines for every leg before you fly, not when you land.

None of this is a reason to book the package. Self-organising the South Pacific is cheaper, freer and far more interesting than one resort would ever be. You just have to do the homework the resort would have done for you: lock the inter-island transport early, pack light for the small planes, and sort your meds and permits before you go.
