A barefoot beach dinner, the surprise that closed our Seychelles trip

For most of the trip my wife kept mentioning the same thing. She wanted, just once, to have dinner barefoot on the beach. Not in a restaurant near the beach. On it, feet in the sand, table at the waterline.

So on our last full day, on Mahe, I quietly arranged it. I found someone who could set it up, and said nothing. We checked into the hotel, got dressed for what she assumed was the usual hotel dinner, and instead of heading to the restaurant I steered us out a side path.

Five minutes later we walked onto a stretch of beach with a single table on it. Flower petals, music, candles, the sun going down over the water, and a local cook waiting with a three-course meal he had made for just the two of us. Her face when she understood what it was made the whole arrangement worth it ten times over.

We ate slowly, barefoot, the sea a few metres away, the light doing what the light does in Seychelles every evening, turning the whole sky soft. It was the last night of a trip that had been full of big things, beaches and tortoises and islands, and somehow this small quiet dinner was the one that landed hardest.

You do not need a grand gesture to close a trip well. Sometimes you just need to listen to the thing your person keeps half-saying, and then make it happen without them knowing. The barefoot dinner she asked for was the best evening we had.
