Guides for this trip
Säntis is the mountain you see from everywhere in eastern Switzerland. At 2,502 metres it is the high point of the Alpstein, the limestone range above Appenzell, and on a clear day its summit tower stands on the horizon from far outside the mountains. From the valley it reads as one clean peak. Once you are on it, that idea falls apart.
I have climbed it three times by different approaches, including routes up from Ebenalp and from the Seealpsee, and each one felt like a different mountain. The perspective keeps shifting, and the terrain gets more dramatic the higher you go: what looks like a single summit from below turns into a proper alpine route on the way up.
The ridge sections are the part I remember. Narrow paths with steep drops on both sides, vertical limestone fins falling away under the grass, and long views across the whole Alpstein that make the hike feel bigger than its altitude suggests. None of it is technical climbing. It is also not for anyone uneasy with exposure.
What makes Säntis unusual is that it never feels remote in a harsh way. There are mountain restaurants along the routes – places to stop, regroup and carry on – and a cable car runs to the summit from Schwägalp on the far side for anyone who would rather skip the climb. That mix turns a serious alpine day into something you can still do as a long day out from Zürich, which is how I have always done it.
The summit pays every time. The view stretches across lakes and ridges and deep into the Alps, and on the clearest days it is said to take in six countries. However you got up, it feels earned. Of the day hikes you can do from Zürich, this is the one I would send you to first.
